Title: Saturday, May 6, 2017 Mini Stampede
Post by: hodakaharold on February 20, 2017, 07:45:40 PM
Late April / early May mini stampede in Eureka is being discussed and considered, anyone interested?  We did this in the past, based out of the Blue Stem Motel and had a great time. Woody, if you are interested, we need to know what weekend would work for you (and anyone else that works weekends and might come)

I work every 3rd weekend and my next weekend to work is March 4th so you can look out that way...

Harold, I'm looking good for either of the last two weekends in April. The first weekend in May is out for me.
I'll keep an eye on this thread to see what comes together.

I will likely go as well but may not stay the night at the hotel if that's in the plans.  Any weekend works fine.

We will ride on Saturday, April 29, 2017, kickstands up around 8:30 am at the Blue Stem Motel,,,,,,,,we plan on staying at the Blue Stem Motel on Friday evening. I checked with the Blue Stem and they are wide open if anyone is interested in making a reservation. My brother and I will arrive around noon on Friday and plan to ride all afternoon on Friday. The Rogers brothers are GPS challenged so we will need someone to lead this group on the Saturday ride. Riding north or south from Eureka is always fun so I am open to a suggested route.

I may be interested assuming I'm in town. Sometimes work over rides pleasure.  Am curious as to what the conditions are?  I'm not interested in single track or something I have to work at with a 600lb bike and no knobbies.   And I too am GPS challenged!

Any insight would be helpful!

Much like the stampede, it will be gravel roads, a few no maintenance roads depending on if it has been raining and some black top running. We will have fuel stops planned and of course some great place to eat lunch.  We will be staying overnight on Friday and plan to eat at Benny's Westside for a steak on Friday evening (assuming it is still open for business).  I have always had a great time with other riders there.

On this ride, you are on your own to arrange for your camping, we are staying at the Blue Stem Motel and will leave from there. I believe the lake is a city owned lake so I would contact the City of Eureka about securing a camping site.

Well..... While riding yesterday.... I get this text from the Hodaka man..... Got a great route?

Guess what the Easter bunny left at my house!
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9sfmodxbxyi0zdc/Eureka2017.kml?dl=0

200+ miles, lots of gas stops.  Looks like lunch in Sedan or push to CedarVale.
Pray for no rain!  Some of the roads are min. maintenance.
This is a hybrid of a "Tom approved route!"

You don't need to create a Drop box account to download.  Just click the little x in the top right corner of the login panel.
Download the KLM file, install Google Earth on your PC.  import the KLM file and enjoy!

Who wants to try out their GPS skills and lead?  I can ride sweep if we get separated, dazed or confused.

If you need to convert the KLM file to your specific GPS format, use GPS Babel.  It's free and works!

I'm sure the city lake can accommodate you for primitive camping! They have public showers on the south end of the lake maintenance building I think it is right on the road at the east end of the lake....

You'll want to check with the City if you're interested in camping at Lake Eureka. I was just looking at their website, and I wasn't able to find any references to fees or if it's open for use, or what, though they do mention camping http://www.eurekaks.org/vnews/display.v/ART/5759713d67cc2

Are we still using the rider release forms that we used to use on rides?  If so, where are they now located so I can print off some for the next ride at Eureka.

The ride waivers from the former forum, although not required but highly recommended at least for the emergency contact information can be found here: http://backroadstouring.org/downloads/waiver.pdf (http://backroadstouring.org/downloads/waiver.pdf)

Did someone say they were bringing me pizza and beer post surgery?? Awesomeness......

Has anyone else looked at the 10 day forecast?  We are wet all week and 83% chance of rain the 29th.
The route south will be chopped to bits, due to the dirt roads on the south leg and possibly the field roads near Beaumont.
We may have to change routes and go north instead.

I'm not opposed to riding in some mud or wet conditions. But riding in the rain all day isn't as much fun as it used to be.

Brings back memories of my first stampede.... I'd had my KLR for maybe a month... left my house in the rain. Rode to Eureka Lake in the rain. Forded two water crossings more then skid-pan deep, alone; just to get to the camp site (didn't know I could go around the other side of the lake), pitched my tent in 1/2 standing water... in the rain.

Did I mention it was raining?

Then there's the river crossing and drowned bike....

What does the group think about the forecast? Can we find happiness on some routes going North as Will mentioned?  I am running Shinko 705's front and rear so my little Honda will be a handful in mud.

If the forecast is rain rain rain then we should go north.
Here is a link to my folder with the south and north routes.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nikwx2x4ljyjrny/AACzYZTl6nscpq0QZd_JsmE7a?dl=0

If we decide to go south, I propose reversing the route and do the western side first.  If we get hit with a storm, we can try to out run it going east for a bit.
Harold should remember our last run for the money!  Scary as all get out with lighting coming straight down right behind us!

Mud riding is how you increase your skill level :)

It's also how you realize you are in the wrong place with a buck and 1/4 frame on 425lb plow  :o

I have no issue with the expected mud stints in fair weather, never been on a ride with Gregg yet without hitting mud  ::)

That's not to say I am about to let the cool temps and rain and mud keep me from the backroads....... 8)

You Die Hards have fun and I can't wait for the folly photos!

After several calls and text messages regarding this, we are changing the date once more and for the final time. Mini Stampede will be next Saturday, May 6, 2017. Several leaders could not make it (Kingrider and Will KC) on the 13th. The final authority that changed my mind was the fact it was Mother's Day weekend. My mother is 91 years old and I chose not to fight this battle.
Kickstands up at the Blue Stem Motel at 8:30 am. Come and ride if you can, if not review our pictures and you will wish you had been there.

Link and I rode Will_KC's Southern route and it's a doozy.  Well done Will!  There's plenty of different terrain along the ride, especially as you get further south.  Most of you probably already have ridden along those parts but it was a first for me.  Be cautious at the water crossings for the "green slime"  it's there and it's slick.  There's multiple cows, horses, turkeys, deer, buzzards eating armadillos and dogs out on the road so watch out.  There will also likely be some fresh ruts after this weeks rains but nearly there were only a few roads marked "Minimum Maintenance"  We ran into one 40 Head Cattle drive on a narrow road and we shut down the engines and waited to let them pass.
Here's an attempted link to some photos of the day's ride.

Awesome! I guess I missed where this route is...? (edit:, Eureka southern...got it ;)  )
I remember doing a cattle move like that just west of Americus when I lived on a farm and was 15. Unfortunately I was a foot soldier on that drive, and those errant heifers in the video bring back memories lol.

Sweet! Have witnessed herding scenes a few times on a ride. On one Stampede ride, happened to be a unhappy bull who gave the patrol more than a menacing look or two, and we were literally 'pinned' against a barbed wire fence while it passed!

Thanks for the share!

What is our head count going to be?
I plan on riding in Friday evening after work.
Anyone besides Nick, Hodaka, ASIS, Tom and myself?
Harold are you bringing extra ride waivers?

I'll be there, have a room for Friday night at the blue stem motel. Saturday looks to be a beauty.

Iím sort of a newbie here. Dale is my name. I go by Dirtcruzer. I live in Wichita. I will ride my DRZ400 to Eureka. It is about an hour or so to ride there from Wichita. I geared it for the highway. My other bike is a BMW F650GS. As I understand it, we meet at the blue stem motel at a little after 8:00 AM. Would like to know where the end point will be at the end of the day. I will probably head back to Wichita for the night.  I will make sure I fill out the ride waiver. Looking forward to the ride.

Thanks for the ride today guys, sorry that my troubles slowed down the patrol.

I made it home safely, though my tire was flat again by Independence.
