Title: Kansas Dual Sport Safari 2018 Garnett, Kansas
Post by: hbadventure on February 28, 2018, 09:21:44 AM
It is official. We are doing this. JUNE 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.  We have routes for all skill level of riders, on gravel and on trails. We have a tree canopy, bridges and rivers route. A Hills, Hollers and Trails covering trails and roads to get to more trails. Working on others depending on the number we get signed up. Plenty of routes to see and good times to be had. Our ride area sits in what my father calls "Lap Land" where Missouri laps over into Kansas just a bit. From Garnett you can go just east and be in the hills and hollers, or just west and be at the walkway to the flint hills. So we have a little of everything which we intend to ride!

Remember we are raising money for the Lion's Club vision projects. Never knew how important their work was until I hit 40 and started to loose my vision!

Feel free to print and post the banners, spread the word! We will have a great time and you will want to come back.

Check out the band, yes I am the singer be gentle show us some love!  https://www.facebook.com/frckansas/?ref=bookmarks (https://www.facebook.com/frckansas/?ref=bookmarks) we will be playing the night away after the ride on Saturday.

Registration website is www.cognitoforms.com/garnettlionsclub/registration (http://www.cognitoforms.com/garnettlionsclub/registration)

Garnett recreation flier is part of attachment covers camping accommodations and lodging information for Garnett.  Also for all registered riders there is a special rate at The Kirk House of $60.00/night check it out here http://www.thekirkhouse.net/ (http://www.thekirkhouse.net/)

I hope to see many of you there and to make new friends! If you have questions feel free to PM me!  Ride Safe

Normally, I'm at my place in Blue Mound on weekends, however that weekend I may be in Oklahoma.  If anything changes, I'll be there.

Ok so the Lions Club has thrown in a little "Lure" to get people to register before hand. Early registration people (By May 18th) will get a Steak Dinner prepared as a part of their fee! These ol' Boys can cook! Routes, trails and  roads are being finalized and I want to thank ajayhawkfan (Edward ) and Larry Webber for the assistance and wisdom in preparing routes and for just being good guys! Also thanks to Scott, Kevin, Dane and Vic for helping me map trails!
So please go register before May 18th, it will help us out a LOT and we can make it the best it can be if we get a good idea how many are coming! We are doing our best to make this a fun event with great people and plenty of entertainment for everyone to have a good time.

Where else can you drop $80 and get a T-shirt, breakfast, a steak dinner, live entertainment from 3 bands, and a personalized tour of south eastern Kansas on two wheels?

If you can't figure out the website for registration call 785-304-3870 or send an email to dualsportsafari@garnett-ks.com we will help you out.

One last thing. We have had several inquiries about "non-registered" or "atv" inclusion in the event and the answer is no, every route (including the trails "mostly" route)  will include public roads and require you vehicle to be licensed and insured.

Yes there is a place for many campers and tent camping with showers etc. So I just pulled this from google earth and put some pins in it cause that is about the limit of my tech abilities. We will be at the ride hq on the map but if you look at this map we are at the Garnett North Lake complex which includes a golf course, a Frisbee golf course, a competition ski lake (one event per year) and the road that goes around it is still used as a race track for unlimited shifter carts, and once a year we host a track day for race cars, and last but not least we have a pretty huge concert called Cornstock. I am not saying that a motorcycle has broken the speed limit on this road occasionally, but my house is right across 59 highway. It is fun! But it is a public road outside of events! So "obey the traffic laws". The idea is to have everything in one spot so it is easy for everyone to get to the event, camp if they want and hotels are within walking distance (at least the one on 59 hwy) and walking distance to campers or tents. Safety first right! I will attempt to put some links below for some of these events and services. My original post had an attachment wich outlined the camping and who to contact for that. Also for those of you that are going to hang around for a bit on Sunday. On the below camping link there is also an area called the Cedar Valley Reservoir, this is about 5 miles west of town. It has camper hookups and tent camping. It also hosts some pretty knarley trails! They are mostly used by horses, but if you are really good you might make it! These trails are NOT BIG BIKE FRIENDLY!!!

Registered and ready to ride!
Is there any way we can special order T-shirt sizes?  like XXL Tall.
As Eddie would say "I am the only guy he has seen that makes a KLR look small."

Ok guys, I have talked with a lot of guys and gals that say they are coming to the event, but we only have 14 riders registered. I had been doing a headcount on my phone for people who say they are coming, and had over 40... Did we mention a steak if you register by the 18th? Door prizes are rolling in, we will have Darwin awards chosen by ride leaders, After the ride! Door prizes to draw for, good stuff.  Give me another week and we will post up some of the sponsors (Were working on a good one who may bring bikes orange bikes, and maybe some black ones!!!) and the door prizes. I will post some links to the bands that are playing Saturday. Roads and trails are ready! And the Lions are getting restless! Registering helps us plan the best ride we can plan! So, get your hall pass, get registered, lets go have some fun.

I can try. Everything is relative to who shows up and on what and the weather. But Perfect case scenario. . .

We will have two road routes, and one Trails route. Each road route will transverse three counties, Anderson, Linn and Bourbon. Our routes will be between 130 and 170 miles depending on how much fun everyone is having could go more if the leaders and group decide. Routes will be 80% eastern Kansas gravel roads (they include lots of hills and curves, tree canopies etc.so stay together and wait for the man behind you!!!!!) there will be about 20% minimum maintenance roads (mostly in bourbon county) we have some really neat roads in Bourbon County, probably between 1 and 10 obligatory water crossings depending on water levels (none too challenging, but ya some a slick its water and it grows moss), We will give you all the sights and thrills that this part of our great state has to offer. These routes are for all skill levels. My wife will be riding on one of the routes. There will be no 85 mph with your hair on fire on these road routes. The roads in this part of the state are NOTHING like the Flint Hills. You cannot spread out over 15 miles with a group because there is at least one curve per mile on most of these routes or a giant hill and sight lines are much closer together. So speeds will probably average 35-45 ish... Pretty easy fun scenic riding for an interesting geography.

The Trails route is one that will have some requirements, I don't want to scare anybody off, but this is not big bike friendly, unless you don't really like your bike. Most of our trails are wide and groomed, but very hilly (think Arkansas) we have a couple gracious land owners who have amassed a lifetime of trail making into a really neat day of riding, some beautiful country and fun to ride. On this route you will need an aggressive tire, no street tires (I am running a Big Block and my son is on a TKC80). But again don't be afraid you just need traction for the hills. We will snake through an area of Anderson county covering more than 3500 acres and I'm not sure how many miles of trails as your gps will cut out many many times due to the tree cover. On this ride it will My son and I will be leading it but the intention is for the group to decide. We can stick to the open trails and throw a little roads in there, or we can continue to get into harder trails, majority rules. As the group sees the trails we will adapt and go from there. These trails are fun to just rip around great place for skill building! But This would be considered the advanced ride.

Ride Leaders consist of (for certain): Larry Webber- one of the most experienced ride leaders I know, talented rider and somehow this man knows every road in this state, and by name! It is kinda creepy. Great guy. Larry and his knowledge may go anywhere cause he knows everywhere but the mission is as stated above.
Dane Hicks and Pat Schettler- will be leading another ride on the roads they have been exploring with Larry and I for a while now and are always fun and safe your in good hands. They are quite the jokers and a good time will be had be all!
Russ & Burt Peterson - Father son team that lives to ride and play music, and just enjoy life. We want to have as much fun as we can have and NOT get somebody's eye put out. (yes i bought  Russ a red rider when he was 4).

Questions are welcome! This is a destination event. Wives will find all kinds of fun and we will be entertaining and feeding you. The hospitality of the Garnett Lion's Club and our town welcomes all.

Boy you said a mouthful there my friend! I had no idea until now! It will all be worth it, but ya just knowing how many are coming is a HUGE HUGE HUGE help. From food and door prizes to the ride planning that is where it all starts... How many!
We sure do appreciate all the support and kind words everyone has had for this. I am in deep prayer that we can meet and hopefully exceed expectation for a good time! I have done many things and met many people, but in Aviation, and Motorcycling I have met and continue to enjoy some of the best people on earth. That's why we do it. Thanks Derek.

No it is not. Page one of this has the link to the city of Garnett. They own the camping spots. I'm not sure the cost off hand but it isn't much. And there are showers in the rec center and at the fairgrounds. If you need them.

I live in Topeka so my plan was to be there in time for b-fast Sat AM, do the ride, have dinner and hang out for awhile, then bail sometime Sat night.  I was looking for an address for the Anderson County Fairgrounds and came across this link that has some ride descriptions departure data etc in it but I did not see an address.    http://www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/garnett/page-6.php

I'm sure I can find that start location but if someone can post provide an address that would be great, thanks.

Go to the first post here. There is a flier that has all the addresses for all the locations etc. But here in Garnett we would say from 59 hwy go east on Park road turn left at the swimming pool and look for the motorcycles at the quanset.

I really want to check out the lake, but, I don't want to travel back from the shin dig if there is camping within carrying me/walking (stumbling) distance to my tent.

We have been asked the plan if it rains. So, here is the plan. On our road routes a considerable amount of rain will only make them better as in… no dust! So, unless it is raining at the actual time of departure we will be riding the road routes, yes we will most likely have to go around the water crossings (if it continues to rain a lot), but we will show them to you and see them and continue on the route and we can share .gpx files so exploring on your own can be done.   Now I know a lot of guys are coming for the trails… Me too. And we would never go back on our word for that ride! So the plan for us trail guys is, if it has rained or is raining and the trails are too muddy, get on a road route, ride the roads have fun. We will wait for the trails to dry out, put up a poll on BTK and reschedule and you come back (sounds like 2 for 1 to me?) and we will have a show up and ride the trails only day for those that wanted to see the trails. No fanfare or bands or meals the second time just show up and ride!

Now, if the heavens open up day of. Well we may be forced to reschedule, and we will do that as appropriately as we can, with a poll of several pre-selected dates. Then work out with the group for those that can’t make it. Most fair and democratic method we know of. SO! The farmers got what they needed. Now pray the rain stops until June 4th and then whatever. See ya at the ride!

Damn, I sorry I'm going to miss this event.  The more I hear about it the more I wish I was attending.  Malone's has good food (get the ribeye), the area you will be riding has a lot of nice roads with crossing and I believe Saturday night will be a lot of fun.

I'll look forward to hearing about the ride and seeing pictures.

It is not a complete riding loss for me because I'll be in WI/MN with my bike for a week!

So I am in the 85% certain range that we are going to have a big Orange Bike booth at the Safari. What bikes are you guys interested in seeing? These guys are spending some money and giving some time to get here to help our event and they obviously want to sell some bikes! So, please let me know which models you are "Actually" interested in so they can bring them down. They are going to set up their booth when we get back from the ride and during the meal and band performances.

Burt- the only bike i'd be 'actually' interested in, is a 1090R.  It would be awesome to check out an E-bike but i'm not in the market for one.

I'm afraid I can't afford a free ride on a 1090R...... I already spent about an hour and a half in Letko looking at one a few months ago!

If they let me ride it, I just might ride it home!  ;D

Dual Sport Safari riders,

The weather has cleared and we're on like Donkey Kong. As of today we have 41 registered riders with more possibly on the way.

YES... we ARE still accepting late registrations if you know someone who wants to come. They can register online or wait until Friday night check-in or Saturday morning check-in. But when we go kickstands up at 8:30 Saturday, it will be too late!!

Here's a run-down of the latest info. If you have additional questions don't hesitate to call or text me at (785) 304-3870.

FRIDAY:
1) Sign-in begins at 6 p.m. at Maloans Restaurant in downtown Garnett. You'll get your wristbands, tshirts, breakfast tickets and sign waivers- and the chamber of commerce has some goody bags for you too. Eat dinner there if you want... they have great steaks and cocktails and a full menu. Some of the local riders will be there too if you have questions.

2) It is going to be WARM Saturday, so DRINK LOTS OF WATER today and Friday.

3) If you have not already made overnight plans, trailer campers can camp for free at the fairgounds... just pull to the west side of the parking lot along the grassy berm between the football stadium and the community building. Tent campers can camp along the grass by the chain link fence along the baseball field and north of the outfield. There will be no electricity at these locations but they are available if you want. They're also closer to the activities & showers than the other city camping areas that do have facilities.

4) Showers: We anticipate returning to the fairgrounds Saturday between 4 p.m-5 p.m. You will be able to shower at the Garnett Recreation Center (corner of Park Road and Lake Garnett road- old National Guars armory building you pass as you enter the park). Just show the guy at the desk your wrist band and he will take care of you. Hint: bring your own towel, soap and shower slippers. You can also shower at the fairgrounds restrooms at the north concession stands.

5) Breakfast tickets: When you check in you'll get a little yellow ticket that is your breakfast ticket. BE SURE to hold onto this ticket, because when you give the desk your ticket at breakfast it tells us how many meals to pay the VFW Post for- since they're doing breakfast for us.

6) Wrist bands: If you pre-registered before May 18 you'll have a different colored wrist band than those who registered after that date. These will be your ticket for your ride, dinner, showers, etc. Be sure to put it on at checkin and leave it on for the duration. We will divide up into trails groups/roads groups Saturday morning.

7) Water: As I mentioned above, it will be warm so drink up. We will have bottled water available for you for free at the fairgrounds to pack on your ride.

8) Lunch Saturday: We will be eating on the road Saturday

9) Saturday dinner: We'll start serving at 6 p.m. at the community building (it's air conditioned!) If you registered early we have reserved your steak. If you registered late, any extra steaks will be available first come, first-served, but we will be serving a pulled pork plate from the trailer on the fairgrounds. Don't worry- we will get you fed!! Extra steak dinners (if available) will be $15 for additional wives/kids/guests.

10) All your names will be automatically entered for door prizes, and we'll start drawings at dinner time Saturday. Music will run from 6:30-11-ish. Be sure to hang around and see if you won something!

11) There is talk of pick up rides on Sunday, but we have nothing formally organized. Talk to ride leaders and other riders if you want to ride on your own Sunday.

12: Sponsors: Our sponsors are LETCO Cycles, Beckman Motors in Garnett, Goppert State Savings Banks, and Elliott Insurance in Paola. Other sponsors include The Anderson County Review, Prairie Belles Restaurant, Edward Jones- Josh Nelson, Kansas Property Place, Flatland Racing,  Cycle Gear (Lenexa), 6th Avenue Boutique & Bronze, Maple Street Liquor and Wittman's NAPA Auto Parts. Letco is bringing a booth and some bikes down with free bling, so be sure to show them some love.
